Virtually all of the updates released by Microsoft are to fix security holes in their programs. Some also help programs run faster. And a few now, check for viruses.

I recommend getting at least most of Microsoft's updates just for security reasons. Otherwise, you are vulnerable to known security holes in Microsoft's programs.

The only reason I can imagine that he would have said that is if the Windows was not an original... (like the post just above mine says).

NO, don't do that!!! you NEED to keep the Auto updates turns on. Do NOT trust him. He could be a hacker, trying to steal your identity. He sold you his computer to you, and told you not to turn it on or update the Windows is a NO-NO. Don't listen to him. By updating your computer with Windows updates, it helps you to keep bad guys off (only to a part, you'll need anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall to complete the protection), keep your computer at its best with the security. EVERY computer needs update.

I believe this guy is not an honest person. He told you not to turn the auto-update on, and he sold you his computer, he's up to something. I bet he has planted a keylogger or some kind of snooping software into your computer before he sells it to you, so he can watches what you're doing from his computer, this as known as (aka) a hacker.

He could also sold you an illegal Windows version, which will be detected by Windows Genuine Advantage validation. Whenver you downloaded this WGA, and it senses your Windows is not legit, it will stop protect you.

Please have your computer check out by a trusted friend, if possible, format the computer and reinstall the Windows and any programs back on.

You can let Windows just notify you about the necessary available updates before downloading or installing them on your system. Sometimes Microsoft releases major security fixes and no harm from getting notified about them.

1. Right Click on "My Computer".

2. Properties.

3. "Automatic Updates" Tab.

4. Click on the radio button labeled "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them" then OK

5. While working online, sometimes, a balloon tip will notify you about available updates, where you are free to select and install the updates suitable for you.

they are all correct. I will answer the second half of your question. You can remove MOST windows updates, but not all. If you read before you install the updates microsoft will tell you which ones are permanent. To remove update go to control panel double click add remove programs. and click show updates, near the top of the window. Now you can remove windows updates if you want to. PS go kick that guys but, he was setting you up for failure.

The man you bought it from probably sold you an illegal copy of windows or is an idiot. Unless your computer never connects to the internet, you always need to download and install all of Microsoft's critical updates.

He said that for one of two reasons:

1. He is an IDIOT!

2. He installed illegal Windows and knows you will learn that if you try to update Windows.

You will soon learn if it is legal software by going to Microsoft/Windows Updates.

sounds like he sold you a pirated copy of windows, which will be detected when you visit the update site; where they will turn off your machine. big time.
so, get your money back if you plan to go on the net; unpatched units will almost certainly be hacked within minutes of net access, and it won't be any good to you then anyway.
get your money back if you can.
