Okay, I know someone who I think likes me. I love this person. But when we're together when others are around we he constantly bashes me with negative comments. When it's just us two, we have such a great time. Any ideas as to why he does this?

Self-loathing. Perhaps he has not yet come to terms with his natural, inborn sexual orientation. This is why you see a different face in private, when there are no others around to make him worry about how he will be judged/accepted.
Many people cover their awkward feelings in this way - some of them post "questions" here as trolls.

Probably just his image of himself while in the presence of his friends/other people. He probably feels like he has to be a certain way in the presence of such people, and does not realize that it hurts you; it is funny to those other people, and so he goes with the moment......he may even feel like those people will "judge him" or feel as if he is "weak" if he shows more compassion towards you.......kind of stupid, but i have seen this many times. so, in order to appear like the relationship may not be the most important thing in his life (when around those other people), he belittles you in their presence........
talk to him, and ask him; things might get better if he is approached, but do it sensitively so as not to drive him away!

Are you gay? Is he not? Maybe he does not want to start rumours about the two of you. The next time you are with him alone, ask him why he acts that way. Sometimes people grapple with their own emotions, and do not know what is right for them. So the carry on a facade. Maybe he needs your help understanding his own feelings for you.

He may be in the closet still or not very secure about his orientation yet. Or he may just be joking around. Some people can be real jerks when they joke around.

I had a friend just like that in high school man.
I solved it by distancing myself from the jerk; people like that aren't really your friends hon. You deserve friends that will stand by you no matter what.
