Its not hard at all...your COMPUTER doesnt give a sh.t. (but Windows "says" its not cool) cause it it just power...electricity....like shutting down your TV during a movie. Although, if you were active in your system...then thats the difference.... finish doing what you were doing first as you can loose data and Windows wont like it much..and re-boot with some options maybe...but hey, its your machine so turn it on and off when ever you want. If you are "forced" to hard shut-down, then you have a wee problem...and we need more info!?

Depends on your computer. Any shutdown that doesn't go thru the shutdown procedures of saving and closing your work may not be hard on the computer, but it sure can make life miserable for the user.

Why are you not clicking on Start>>Turn off computer ??

You should never shut down the computer by holding the power button in, unless you want to break your computer

The reason this hurts your computer is because, first Windows does not shut down properly, so a lot of files, processes, etc., are still running when you shut it down, which can cause problems to those processes. They leave behind temporary files, settings which are not saved, etc.

But, most importantly, if the computer was writing to a file when you shut it down, that file is now corrupted, because it's only half written.
