This question was is this week's Ask Marilyn column and the answer is "So"

"What is the opposite of the word 'not'?

(1) The opposite of "Not" is - Leaving the word "Not" from the sentence.

(2) "Not" is Negative. So the opposite is "Positive"

Technically speaking, "not" is an adverb that marks something as negative. It doesn't have an opposite, but leaving it out produces a sentence that has the opposite meaning.

Not is a negative word. Therefore, the opposite of not would be the positive of that negative sentance.

I automatically thought "is" but then thought that would be the opposite of "is not". Then I thought "thing" but that would be the opposite of "nothing"..... hmmmm good question.

im not sure....at first I thought is as well but i dont tihnk it can be....

sure it makes sense to say
"it is nice out" it is not nice out"
but then what happens when you want to say
"you can not do that!"
the opposite wouldnt be "you can is do that"
lol
