If both of those computers have LAN cards, then all you need is a router and some LAN cables.

assuming windows xp windows 98 will be similiar
ok you will need to connect the two computers with a router and ethernet cables or just connect the two computers directly together with a crossover cable. if you get an amber or green ligtht when you connect the cables they are plugged in correctly. If you use a router it s-h-o-u-l-d assign the IP address automatically. If it does not you will have to set it yourself. to do this click start then right-click network places, and left click on properties. You should see a icon that says local area connection connected right click that and left click properties scroll down the list until you see internet protocol TCP/IP double click on that then for the ip address put in 192.168.1.54 for the subnet mask put 255.255.255.0. The settings for the other computer will be exactly the same except the number at the end of 192.168.1 need to be different 192.168.1.87 for example . it can be any number between 1 and 254 although a lot of routers like to use 1 and 254 so dont use those. once you have your ip's set you will need to set the workgroup. right click my computer left click on properties left click on computer name, click on change and type the SAME name for the workgroup on both computers call it bills workgroup or whatever just make sure they are the same. click ok and exit the windows you have open, and reboot. Now you will be able to share printers, resources, and play network games. Hope that helps

If you just want to connect two computers, that are near each other, you can use a crossover cable, and connect it from computer to computer.

If you are going to later use more computers, then you will need a router, and use ethernet cables to connect all the computers together.

If the computers are not near each other, then you may need to get a wireless router and connect the two computers wirelessly. To do this each computer will need a wireless adapter, and then you will need to setup the wireless connection. To do this, see the documentation that comes with the wireless adapters and the wireless router.
