disconnect your batt for about 5 min. it doesnt have to be as long as the last answerer said. if that doesnt do the trick, then it could very well be an emissions problem. check the o2 sensor and the egr valve maybe even the cat. it could also be from a vaccum leak. my 1991 buick century has the check engine light come on and it has a vaccum leak in one of the many hoses. good luck. hope this helps at all

Start engine and bring to normal operating temperature. If engine will not start or stalls after starting, proceed with next step.
Turn the key "OFF", then wait ten seconds.
Activate the self test by grounding the Self-Test Input (STI) connector.
Turn the ignition key "ON".
Record all codes received.
Turn ignition "OFF".
to reset disconect batt for 1 min press brake padle and then put cable back on. if the light is on there might be a code record the flashes first and then look at the code list fix as needed

The check engine light is on for a specific reason but you can find out by asking someone who has a scanner to get the engine code for you and you can find out the reason on the internet. I hope this helps.

Disconnect your battery for 1/2 hr. If the light comes back on the problem was not fixed.

You should tell the mechanics working on your car to do it for you. But they may charge you for it.
