Change is scary to most people and they would rather deal with "the devil they know" if you know what I mean. What if they make a bold step forward and end up worse off than before? Some people aren't willing to take that chance, so they opt for what they already know and is essentially "safe" to them.

Many people stay exactly in the place they are because they need to be there. You can't help those who don't help themselves. They are "chronic complainers". Even when things are good, they find a way to put a negative spin on them. Talk is easy .... but actually doing something about the problem is hard work.
Often people complain simply to be heard. Some do it because it makes them feel like they are the centre of attention.
You're absolutely right ... they are CHOOSING to live in a certain way and therefore, when you feel that you have the inclination and/or time to listen to their problems .... go ahead. Just don't think that you'll ever affect any change in them .... that MUST come from within themselves.
You're obviously a sensitive person who has listened a lot .... continue on but save any advise for yourself!

at times, fear takes over, and when it does we go on a downward spiral. It is the same as being caught in a big wave that will not let go. Someone who is out of the water needs to help. Yes, the individual has to want help, and if you are ready to help in a positive way, give that help. Do not dwell on the problems, but help them to find reasonable solutions. If you cant help, find someone who will. Many good churches have free counseling programs without getting all religious.

It's sometimes easier to deal with the demons you know, than to change and deal with demons you don't yet know about. In other words.... Fear.
That and Karma.
Sometimes we stay in places we'd be better off leaving, not because we don't want to change, but because there's a lesson we haven't yet learned from that situation.

I am reminded of a passage in Charles Darwin's "The Origin of Species" in which he says that any species that cannot
change are doomed to extinction. And so it is with humens, if you cannot change you will;l surely not make it in this world.

People must WANT TO change in order to change. Sometimes this is very difficult. People who cannot change dont want to change.

YOU KNOW CHANGE IS SCARY TO MOST... AND CAN BE INTIMIDATING.......BUT KEEP ONE THING IN MIND... WHEN IT COMES TO MATTERS OF OTHER PEOPLE AND TRYING TO HELP THEM OUT IT BEGINS WITH THAT PERSON. NOW YOU CANNOT REALLY HELP SOMEONE WHO DONT WANT TO HELP THEIRSELVES
