Unless you were in a coma or there was some other catastropic emergency, you don't. Most companies have a termination policy after three days of no-call, no-show (for "job abandonment"), so if you didn't disappear for three days, you should just receive a reprimand.

The only way of doing that usually is to provide a legitimate document from a physician, courthouse, etc. otherwise there really is no excuse for not bothering to even call to let them know you wouldn't be in that day.
