There are many things you can do.
Turn down the brightness on your monitor
Have your laptop turn off its monitor when not in use for only a few minutes.
Disable your wireless (when you're not using it)
Disable your wired (LAN) connection (when you're not using it)
Turn off your sound
You will probably find the most increase in battery life when turning down your monitor's brightness and disabling your wireless adapter.
