Very true. Image has ALOT to do with it. There are a few exceptions to the rules, but for the most part its all about the image and the technology that makes the artist sound better than they really do.

Not to mention the individuals performance and charisma, not necessarily the voice makes the artist REALLY successful.

Little to no truth. You don't get into the music industry, regardless of what genre, without some kind of talent. And you don't dedicate your life to getting into the industry unless you have some passion for what you're doing.
If you're going to compare pop artists to, say, metal guitar virtuosos or opera singers, yes, they are comparably less talented, but compared to your average schmo on the street? They have talent oodling out their ears. You try singing on key, projecting your voice, remembering dance moves (while singing at the same time) in front of thousands of people for weeks or months and see how well you do.
