progesterone is used for alot of things..
1. it can be used to regulate you menstrual cycle( i use it for that reason)
2. helps with increasing your chances of conceiving if you use it at the right times
3. helps with you to remain pregnant if you have a history of miscarriages
4. is also used for a birth control if used through out your whole cycle..

If your using it to increase chances of conceiving use it right after ovulation until the onset of your period..

As for using it to help reduce the risk of miscarriage you should talk to your doctor about this and he/she can better determine when you should use it in your cycle

Progesterone is a hormone naturally produced by women's bodies. After ovulation the corpus luteum, the follicle the egg was released from, begins to produce high amounts of progesterone to thicken the lining of the uterus in preperation for pregnancy. If pregnancy is acheived then the progesterone continues to be produced. If no pregnancy then the corpus luteum dies and the progesterone level drops.
Provera or Prometrium are the most common pill forms of progesterone. They are given to either start a period that is late or sometimes prometrium or other form of progesterone like cream or suppositories are used from ovulation through the early part of pregnancy in women with Progesterone deficiency. Women with low prog. are more likely to miscarry and that is why they are given the synthetic hormone progesterone, to help sustain the pregnancy.

It can be used for both. I've taken it to start my period when my cycle was off. I now take it when ttc from day 16 of my cycle, until my next period or until the end of my first trimester if I conceive. After you ovulate, your body produces progesterone, but the levels usually drop when you start your period. However, if you become pregnant, your progesterone level rises to help nourish the uterus lining until the placenta takes over around the end of the first trimester.
