My home window, I have to use a board cut to hold window open they don't stay up any more.

if they're the older style double hung windows, look for the pulley in the top of the window frame. there should be a cord from the side of the window sash, that goes over the pully, and behind the frame, and then attatched to an iron or lead weight.if one or both of them are broken, then the cord needs to be replaced. you can access the weight pocket either through an access panel built into the window frame, and held in place by a couple of screws. or you may have to remove the casing or trim boards from the face of the window where it meets the wall.

I'd use a board, or a strong structure such as a brick.
