And you're saying that in WW I and II, that people had lower IQ's? Perhaps it was that most if not all the nation was firmly committed to winning?

First off, how old are you that your parents were winning wars and men took care of their families, also, you're being just a bit too simplistic in your assertion.

My parents (both) were in WWII and yes, they won that war, but as my father has always reminded me, that was a war with a clear objective. Korea had no such clarity, neither did Vietnam. Both those wars were politically motivated, there was no direct threat as Hitler was.

As for the current 'war on terror', it's been bungled from the get go. You have a nation that in a moment of justifiable grief, lashed out at friend and foe alike. It demanded submission by any and all and in the process became petulant and childish.

As for finding oneself, that's neither new nor is it unique to the latter period of the 20th century, it was just more pronounced.

Bottom line, simplistic views are just that, simplistic. Like it or not the world is not black and white but just so many shades of grey. Osama was and is the enemy, Saddam was merely a scapegoat and people aren't as stupid as some would have them be.

Well, personally, my parents are of the age to be of an age with or younger than most people "running the world" right now. Do you mean in the 1960s, when Vietnam was going on? The '50s, when we came out a tie (at best) in Korea? In the 40s, when we finally entered WW II and then dropped big nukes on innocents? In the 30s, when depression meant that many families had to abandon their children or die of starvation? In the 20s, maybe, when "finding yourself" was all the rage and drug use was on the rise?

I think you're mistaking a rose-tinted version of yesteryear with the actual truth.

Nation building is something Armies are not really good at doing. They need support of the local population to succeed, (ie German civilians during WWII). However, if the local population play both sides (ie Vietnamese during the Vietnam war and Iraqis in this present war), it is very difficult. Maybe I'm wrong. Just my opinion.
