It does not!!!
If you are a pledge in a frat (I doubt sorority girls are beating up their pledges) and they are beating you "to see if you can take it", and/or still want to be there/still show loyalty....you need to quit right now, walk straight out, swallow your pride and respectfully resign.
If a brotherhood depends on physically assaulting a pledge, then seeing who is stupid enough to stay and then call them brothers, they are pretty weak as a brotherhood to begin with.
They need a new direction and better principles on why they want to call themselves brothers. They are no better than punk-thug gangs that "beat-in" their members.
Really....if you are in college and some brother feels he needs to beat the crap out ouf you to see if you are worthy....why would you want to call this guy brother?
Frats go way beyond your school years and should compliment your personal and professional life.....would you really want to possibly have a guy offer you a job, be your boss or help you get a home loan for you and your family because you got your butt kicked by him in college? Probably not.....
That would be such a great story to tell your family at a big Thanks Giving dinner...."Yea.....and we got into this nice big house with such a great interest rate because Brother____ kicked my butt my freshman year and totally thought I was cool and took a beating well......" Yea...like dude in frats like that would even have a job in banking!!!
Be smart.

I was in a fraternity, but they never "beat us up." Yes, we had to perform some pretty strange tasks, and had to do push-ups and such, but there was never any physical violence.
But to answer your question more generally, the "hazing" involved in pledging a fraternity is designed to form a tighter friendship between the members of the pledge class. The idea is that if you have faced adversity with someone, you are more likely to trust them.

A lot of frats and sorrorities are being shut down for hazing which is what you're describing it could be a physical assault or doing things with drugs and alcohol. If they're doing this to you as a way to get you inducted leave them and find a different group that inducts you through a swearing in by oath and a respectable reception afterwards.

Hazing has no place in a Greek Letter Organization. My sorority, and my campus, have both taken a strong zero-tolerance stance towards hazing - the physically or mentally detrimental actions towards a member. If you are being hazed, you should speak with your chapter president about it, and if nothing happens, report it immediately to your University and to your national office. Greeks who haze give the rest of us a bad reputation and make people afraid to join.

Army mentality I suppose. I'd recommend not joining one of those retarded things. It's just an excuse for people to control others.
