Like most foods, pizza has evolved a bit over the years, so your question depends on what you want to call "pizza". Bread has been around for thousands of years, and with that I'm sure you can find examples of people who put toppings like cheese on their bread. But the Italians didn't start using tomatoes until they brought them back from Mexico during the age of ocean exploration. By the 1700s something that we'd identify as "pizza" was certainly being made.

Pizza was really nothing more than a strange ethnic food, and pretty much a poor people's food, until the mid 20th century when "pizzerias" kept opening up over the US.
