I love mutual funds, but you have to understand that they just provide diversification of it's class of fund.
They can be very safe, like money market funds
They can be very risky, like emerging market micro-cap funds.
They can be tied to resources, like prescious metals, or energy or mining, but with each comes it's own set of risks
or they can be index funds that track a certain stock market index.

Mutual funds can be better than owning individual stocks for the small investor, but you still have to know what you are doing, or have good advice from the seller of the funds.

Ive had good experiences with mutual funds. Very good and safe investments. Best thing is talking to a broker that has access to the best mutual funds in the business. I'm with Edward Jones and I am very pleased with there service reputation and returns. hope this helps.

I've had fairly good experiences with mutual funds. They aren't perfect, but they are a convenient way to invest.

Just make sure that you know what you own and can explain it to somebody else.
