William (II) Rufus ( c. 1056 - 1100) called ` William the Red ´

King of England from 1087, the third son of William (I) the Conqueror. He spent most of his reign attempting to capture Normandy from his brother Robert (II) Curthose , Duke of Normandy. His extortion of money led his barons to revolt and caused confrontation with Bishop Anselm. He was killed while hunting in the New Forest, Hampshire, and was succeeded by his brother Henry I.

Excellent 'Ben' except that Matilda (also known as The Empress Maude) really should have come before Stephen. She was Henry's daughter but the knights of England wouldn't accept a Queen Regnant on the throne so her cousin Stephen took the throne in her stead. This plunged England into years of civil war. After Stephen's death (without a male heir after the death of his son) Matilda's son Henry inherited the throne
