France bankrolled the American Revolution. French culture & philosophers were a major influence on the founding fathers and the Age of Enlightenment.

What did the American founding fathers then think when they heard of the French Revolution and its descent into the Reign of Terror?

I can't find any information on what Ben Frankling & Thomas Jefferson thought (or other leaders).

At first they thought the French were terrific, that it was the second domino that would sweep across the world the spirit of democracy. However, once the reign began they were seriously disturbed by it, hated it, and wanted to distance themselves from it. It bothered them that the French had gotten it so wrong.

I don't have any links, but I remember hearing about how Ben Franklin was disgusted, as were most people in the West.
