I have gotten several things done when the money was available but now I am at a crucial point of trying to do my 501(c) (3) status. I would like to open a group home for girls in Atlanta Ga . Please lead me in the right direction. God Bless

Hi I am exec dir of a nonprofit in Clermiont GA about an hr and 15 min from you. Have you done your GA incorp? That is step 1 before the 501c3. You can do the 501c3 yourself or have a lawyer do it. I have done 2 for others so I know it can be a do it yourself. If yours is a faith based project there are a couple of easier ways (also cheaper). Once you have the 501c3 there are a number of grant possibilities in your back yard. Check Atlanta Community Foundation. You can't apply for grants there till you are a nonprofit but you can go uyse their materials and go down stairs in same building to the Foundation Center Library. They have more info and more free help in grant writing than you can take in at any 3 gioven times.

Most grantmakers do want the 501c3 which means costs $450 plus $99 GA nonprofit incorporation (which you can definately do yourself if you were capable of writing this post it can even be done on line) plus $40 mandatory legals publication fee. It generally takes about 6 mo for the 501c3 once you send it in tho can take up to 2 yrs I'm told.

Please see our site at http://caringhandsmin.tripod.com and also see http://lampga.tripod.com and then maybe email me from the site to see if there are ways we can work together and help each other. L.A.M.P. is a separate ministry but we work closely together and have a number of board members in common etc.

As a nonprofit, the main way you will get funding is through grants. Go to http://www.grants.gov/ to see what government grants are available, if any, and how you can apply for them. You may also find grants at http://foundationcenter.org/ Then, go to http://www.npguides.org/ for instructions on how to write a foundation grant proposal
