going to Vegas on April 2-6, staying at the NY-NY. Best buffet? - how can I get tickets to sold out Zumanity?

This is my first trip to Vegas. Taking my girlfriend. Is NY-NY a decent hotel? How easy is it to get upgraded? $20 trick work?What about the pool- if it is not any good- can you get into other pool's? Not big on gambling more sight seeing. Looking for good food(buffets-nothing to high class), good shows and people watching. At the same time not wanting to spend alot of money. Any help would be great! Reading thru the reviews seems to be a waste of time.

The first week of April is very slow, you're checking in on a Monday and leaving Friday, I would say you have an excellent chance at an upgrade using the $20 trick. A bit of advice, try to get a room that faces North for the best view, South if that's not available and West as a last resort, the rooms that face East have a problem with noise from the Manhattan Express roller coaster

NY NY is a nice hotel in a great location, the rooms are on the small side, the pool is only average by LV standards. You have to be a guest to use the pool at most LV hotels. There are two exceptions and they are two very nice pools, you can use the Hard Rock & the tropicana's pools because they have swim up blackjack in their pool and Nevada Gaming Commission rules require them to allow you access "cool huh" >If they ask, you're going to play blackjack :-) <

Mac King - Harrah's - $7.95 with the coupon they hand out in the booth, located in the carnival court next to Harrah's

Larry G Jones - Fitzgeralds - the man of 1002 voices($22)IMHO he's as good as Danny gans($100)

Dirk Arthur - Tropicana - Extreme Magic - tickets $29 but you can find 2-4-1 coupons in the free hotel magazines in your room or the hotel gift shop

Rick Thomas - Orleans - Magic - Tickets are around $35

You can always check with "tickets 2night" 1-888-TIX2NITE they have three locations, two on the strip and one downtown. They open at noon with 1/2 price tickets for that evenings show. They do have a service charge and they DO NOT have tickets to the best shows.

Since you seem to be interested in good value. I have a tip for you, the best rate I could find for NY NY for your nights was $119. the Luxor has those same nights for $69 , and I like the Luxor much better than NY NY. You would have a much better chance for an upgrade at Luxor(4500 rooms) and Luxor has a much nicer pool(S) and they have an inexpensive food court to grab a quick bite. It's a very nice hotel. I don't know how easy it is to get upgraded, but if I play about $75 or so, I get a dirt cheap room. The $20 trick doesn't work anywhere. The pool is very nice. The best buffets, IMO - are Mirage and Mandalay Bay. Shows - any of the Cirque De Soleil ones - except Zumanity, I've heard it's so vulgar it's offensive.

New York, New York is an awesome hotel but the pool is average. It holds 840 people. The $20 trick will not get you upgraded but if you talk to the reception desk they may assist you.
Getting into other pools is somewhat difficult. Most of them require a hotel key and they check carefully. If you want a nice pool NY NY isn't the hotel for you.
To get Zummanity tickets try the hotel box office...even if it says sold out online the hotel keeps a certain amount of tickets for the "day of" performance. Otherwise, try scalpers or Craigslist.

Buffets are all over but not all of them are great. For breakfast hands down it is the Paris. For all other meals I would say The Rio, The Bellagio, Treasure Island, and MGM.
