at 8 weeks and the heartbeat was 176bpm. I got one of those heartbeat monitors at wal mart and I cannot findthe heartbeat. When I was 11 weeks pregnant my doctor could not find the heartbeat with his doppler but he said that is very normal. My queestion is-should I ask to have another ultrasound on the next visit to make sure everything is going ok and we may be able to tell the gender or should i just wait for the 20 week one? thanks

By 15 weeks they should find the heartbeat pretty easily with the dopplar.

My doctor found mine at 10 weeks but it was REALLY hard to find-- he moved it around for quite some time, found it faintly enough to register and i said it wsa "so cute" and laughed and that was enough to move the doppler so that he couldnt' find it again.

Then the next apointment it was like, 5 seconds and my doctor could easily hear it.

Gender will probably have to wait utnil the 20 week one.

If you're going crazy over it, I would go ahead and ask for another ultrasound if he still can't find the heartbeat with his doppler.

I rented a heartbeat monitor and have been able to hear the heartbeat since I was 9 weeks pregnant--but it was very, very hard to find (took me 20-30 minutes to locate it each time for the first couple of weeks). I'm not surprised that your doctor couldn't find it at 11 weeks. He should hear it next time for sure, though.

I got a heartbeat monitor from Motherhood Maternity and at 26 weeks, I still can't hear the heartbeat. I don't know if I'm missing what it should be or what cuz it came with a cassette tape that shows what to listen for. Cassette tape? Who even owns a cassette player anymore...lol, anyways, I can hear my stomach and stuff but no heartbeat. I wouldn't worry about it too much because even at 15 weeks you won't be able to pick up anything with those things. I don't think the heartbeat is heard before the 12th week but your doctor however should be able to hear it at the next appointment and will continue to check at every appointment after that. Congratulations and take care.

With my first pregancy I ran right out and bought a heart rate monitor. All it was good for was making me a nervous wreck. I was never able to hear a thing! The good thing was that I work in a hospital and the unit I worked on had the same heart rate monitor as the docs use and I was always able to pick it up with that. The ones you can buy at a store are no where near as advanced as the ones the doctors use in the offce. If you saw a nice strong heart beat at 8 weeks and haven't had any problems since then my advice would be to put the monitor away to save yourself the worry. At your 15 week appt. the doctor should be able to hear and measure your babies heart tones much easier since the baby will be bigger then. Good luck to you and well wishes for a healthy nine months!!

I am 23 weeks, and got that heartbeat monitor too... i still can't hear it through that thing. Actually, I can BARELY hear my own through it... You'll will hear the heart beat at almost every appointment now, so I'm sure you'll be okay! Also, I would wait for the 20 week appointment (Which I just had! ITS A BOY!) But congrats, and don't worry too much... it's not good for the baby!

The kind you get at Wal Mart is terrible. Most people complain that they can't even hear the heart beat in the third trimester. I didn't even waste my time with that and got a heart monitor from www.babybeat.com. it was so easy and fast and when I got it, I turned it on, put it on my belly and BOOM you could hear his heart beat instantly. HOWEVER, I was 22 weeks when I received it. I would suggest (if you can) taking that back and renting a fetal dopler from babybeat...you'll be much happier and most likely, you'll be able to hear the heartbeat right away when you get it.

He will be able to hear the heartbeat on this next visit. If he doesn;t then he will schedule an ultrasound. I bought the monitor from target as well and it didn't pick up the hearbeat until I was 26 weeks.

Most generally doctors cannot even hear the heartbeat until 12 weeks....I am sure that will be one of the first things they will listen for at your next appointment....if they do not find it then then they will probably send you to ultrasound.

As for the at home monitors....they usually pick nothing up until around 20 weeks and I have heard alot of women not being able to hear them at all during the pregnancy.

By your next appointment the moniter should be picking up the heartbeat. My doctor said some babies can be heard at 8 some not till 12-13 weeks, it all depends on positioning. Don't worry that you can't hear the baby right now.

Many of those heartbeat monitors that you can buy will not be able to find the heart beat until the 16 or 17th week. I would not worry and I'm sure your doctor will be happy to reassure you.
