i have a 99 3.8 L firebird, with about 80k miles on it, i have had no problems with it infact it quite pampered, until now, i came out of the gas station hung a left, and within a block i went from 60lbs of oil pressure to 0lbs. big check gages light, engine died. when i got it refired i had very little pressure, but had about 25 when on the gas. The question, is it likly that the oil pump or the cam bearings would go out inside of a block to lose all my pressure. i know the pump isnt cheep to replace, but the engine deffinatly isn't. looking for some feed back, thank you.

first check oil level. if oil level is OK, DON'T change oil until after testing. oil pressure sending units and gauges fail all the time. you should measure oil pressure with a mechanical gauge to verify wither it is a pressure problem or a gauge problem.

i would change the oil first. If the oil is dirty, it will not show the correct oil pressure. If the oil pump went out, then more than likely you would have no oil pressure at all at any time. Replace the oil sending unit also.

You might have a defective filter, or some other restriction...you do have oil in the crank?
