No. You don't. In fact, most hospitals offer discounts for lower income people (but you won't get them if you don't ask), they will help you to see if you qualify for medicare/medicaid benefits if you ask and they provide installment plans for anyone who needs it.

Nope!! But, if you are admitted to the hospital from the ER they either just switch it over to your hospital bill or they sometimes waive it.
Hope you have medical insurance... being hospitalized is VERY expensive. Just being in the ER is expensive.

They always bill you later..

Well; I would think that you should !?! or might be asked about if you have any insurance!?! it may be a standard question for the most-part !?! the er i go to, ussually bills it. sometimes if u get admitted into the hospital, they waive the er copay. when u r registered they don't know if they will be sending u home or not.

if you have proof of ins, they typically bill you later.
if you don't have insurance, they still have to admit you even if it looks like you won't be able to pay.
