I had this issue and now have decent nails. I started with fiberglass tips. The extra expense of manicures made me think twice about biting my nails. It took me about a year to reprogram this behavior. It also helped that I was wearing rubber gloves at my job at the time. I would also suggest when you get the urge, reach for the chewing gum. It can be done.

I had the same problem, I bit my nails for 20 years, since I was 4 yrs old. Anyway, I finally stopped biting. What really helped me is this nail polish that they sell at the pharmacy, i think it's called Stops It...well you polish your nails with it and it tastes disgusting, really bitter. So everytime you put your fingers in your mouth you remind yourself not to bite because of this awful taste of the polish...hang in there, might take you a few tries...the first week is the hardest. Good luck.

Well, when I was younger I did the same thing, what I did was I thought about all the things I touched all day, then I imagined that all those germs were under my nails. The best thing is to be conscious, when you feel the urge to bite your nails, sit on your hands and leave them there till the urge passes.

I would tape my finger tips so that every time I try to bite my nails I end up chewing on tape. Hopefully you wouldn't get use to the taste

: ( I have the same problem. GRRR Sometimes painting them helps me to leave them alone. It also makes them a little harder to tear. And if you don't like wearing nail polish, you could try clear. Well, good luck!

theres a couple of options that worked for me in the past (they didn't last because i'm back on to my habit, but they may work for you)...
1. clip them daily so they are so low you can't bite them
2. paint them with a bright color so that you'll bite them & then the paint will chip & you'll have all these bright spots of paint in your mouth (it'll taste & look gross, so it may make you stop)
3. get fake nails put on. they are some freaky chemical that you won't want to bite & they are hard so you'll break your teeth doing it.
all these have worked for me one time or another in the past, but i'm still a full-blown addict! so i wish you luck that one of them will work for you & you'll stop for good!
