It's true

It's a psychoanalytic statement more than an honest statement about people's basic qualities. If you believe that down deep we all really have problems, then you're right about the statement. I don't personally believe that down deep people are evil or have problems. Oddly, I'm a persistent optimist, who thinks that everyone is truly happy at heart, because why don't we simply end our lives right now? The reason is that we taste this happiness at some moments in life and the rest of our lives are spent in trying to regain or relive those random moments. Our selfishness, if it can be documented, is really an outgrowth of dealing with the world, not an inherent quality of being a person.

This statement could be the cause of a selfish person trying to justify their selfishness by saying "We are all basically selfish." in other words I'm not the only one.
they might not say directly but this sound like a conscious mind speaking out!

True.

In the event that it was survival of the fittest we'd all be openly fighting each other instead of back biting and bitching and trying to have the biggest car/ bank balance/designer clothing collection etc like society does now.

Try reading 'the selfish gene' an incredibly interesting book, although a little heavy on the scientific side, which has some really interesting theories you'd probably enjoy. Well worth the effort!

its the nature of the beast to want to survive. With ourselves happiness is another form of survival. Without pleasure our minds grow dull and eventually die. It is our instincts that cause us to be greedy, selfish, etc. Without being a little selfish then not even this question could have been asked or answered. You wanted an answer, and I wanted something to do. whether or not you see that as selfish or not isn't the point. It was human nature to seek these things out just as anything else

Basicly we should be, but unfortunately we for the most part have been programmed that this will result in an eternity of hell. A little detached study can quickly enable us to see that farce for what it is, manipulation.
First of all if we are One, and I believe we all are, call it whatever you want, then how can anyone be selfish (as labelled by the program) or equally how could we not be?
All is Well.

Yes, we are all basically selfish, and that is one of the fundamental reasons why we are here. We need to undergo many changes in stages of our lives to make us selfless human. Because humankind in its raw self is very selfish and uncaring. If I say animal behaviour it would be an insult to the other animals as we are suposed to be intelligent animals ourselves. But, are we? Let us assume we are not animals, animals kill only when they need to and have a limit. Humankind has no limits to its wants and will go to any length to achieve and satisfy this craving wants and still it does not get satisfied. Humankind should perfect it self by going through changes which will lift it above itself. Tolerance, patience, love, kindness, are all some of the things we have to master. Only few people are able to do this. The need to control and master the will is crucial to our life on earth. When one have master over one's will, one moves to a higher threshold and so forth. When humankind is able to master and control his will and wants, only then will it be able to stop war, poverty, hunger, killings and discover the key to real life and happiness. Human needs to mature and when it does it will be in harmony with the universe and ''God's miracles sent through His prophets will correspond to that maturity''.

I have a lot to explain but I must go now sorry. Keep it open pls so i may come back to this later. thanx

For most people in the world... very true. Is anyone truly selfless? (Note the distinction between 'selfish' and 'selfless.') If someone spends their whole life doing community service, isn't that a form of self-satisfaction? I think a truly selfless act would be self-sacrifice--your life in the place of another person's. Arguably, however, even then you're fulfilling your own needs.

As much as it sucks, even when we are supposedly "selfless" and giving of our time to others, we are still doing it for selfish reasons. It makes us feel good about ourselves. I don't know if people can even BE different when it comes to selfishness... how would it be possible? I'd like to know so I can try it.

I agree. I believe all people are basically selfish. We want stuff we dont need. We were all born with natural right, but we want more than those natural rights.
