How can I change his mind?

She's gained about 20 pounds in the past year and is very self-concious about it.

He's a health nut, and he thinks that giving her a gift of a year long membership at the gym for Mother's Day is the greatest idea he's ever had!

I think it is an insult.... what do you think?

How can I make him see this is rude?

Plus, his mother knows I always pick out her gifts, even though from both of us, and I don't want her to think I had anything to do with this!

I totally agree that it would be too easy for your MIL to feel insulted by this gift, unless of course your husband has actually heard her express an interest in having such a membership. Perhaps a gift certificate to some sort of day spa place or other "pampering" type membership----massage or facial and nail salon, eg.----might be better and get her thinking positively about her own appearance, health and fitness without referencing her weight gain directly.

If there's any possible way to engage her in conversation to find out what her feelings are about gym memberships, this might be worth a try.

Good luck!

Sorry but your husband regarding this, is an idiot.

If you mother in law is self conscious about this then this is the best way to put her down even more.

She won't use the Gym, she might go for the first week but then will see it as a discarded fad. Buy her something from yourself and let your husband do what he wants to do. Your present will turn out better than a present which basically is a chore.

If she wanted to get fit then she would.

Why not give her a gift card to the day spa..? Or a bath and body work gift set? If she wants a membership to the gym, she can get it herself..No need to try to rub it in her face..

I always say a gift card is best. Them she can get something she wants or needs. I know if I received a gift like that, I would probably never use it, hence...a waste of hard earned money.

If she has expressed interest in obtaining a gym membership or other form of weight- loss/management, then I see no problem with it. Maybe he, you or both could also get one and make it a family thing.

Very bad idea, I would be upset if someone did that to me. I like the answer above mine that would be a much better gift
