First off I would NEVER suggest Texas as a good place for gays and lesbians. Come on, use your head. BUSH CAME FROM TEXAS!!
But if you MUST, I'd say Austin is probably the most tolerant and accepting city. It's a big cultural center, very laid back, open, great for kids and families, has lots of cultural events and sights, tons of music events, art events and galleries, and is a lot of fun!
Any major city in any state that happens to be an educational or cultural hub is always going to be more tolerant of gay/lesbians and our families.
I live near Chicago, like Austin it's an education and cultural hub. Lots of cultural, music and art events, lots of history, museums, galleries, schools...etc. So, naturally it's a more tolerant area. Plus Chicago is near Northwestern University (in Evenston, just north of the city - one of the original "Big Ten" Ivy League schools!), it's near Augistana College, Columbia Chicago{performing arts and film school}, University of Illinois Chicago (HUGE Liberal Arts school), Loyola University (big on pre-law and pre-med), Marquette University (awsome basketball team and big on the sciences).
Home of the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Museum of Science and Industry, Lyric Opera of Chicago, DuSable Museum of African History, Chicago Museum of Modern Art, host to SOFA Chicago (Society of Functional Art), home of the Brookfield Zoo and Lincoln Park Zoo, The Adler Planterium, Sched Aquarium, Garfield park and concervatory, The Art Institute School and Museum, our amazing MAGNIFICENT MILE SHOPPING, The Buckingham Fountain, Grant Park, Milenium Park, the Lake Front!!!
The city consists of Seventy-Seven community areas, known as Neighborhoods. From the loop and Downtown, to the Lakeshore, Lakeview (Also known as boystown), Andersonville, New Town, Rogers Park, Norwood Park, Forrest Glen, Edgewater, Jefferson Park, Logan Square, Lincoln Park, Avondale, Portage Park, Englewood, and Many Many others!

Dallas area. I lived there for two years in Plano which is just north of Dallas. Some of the best schools in the nation! Houston (where I am from and live) isn't all that great. Spring, Katy, and Cy Fair all have claimed to be good school districts
and they are, but they have not ranked in the top 100 in years!
