Before you cut it down, look for snails and in particular snail babies. Their activity is always at night. Go out at night with a flashlight and see if you find little dots on your plants. Snail young are very small but come in great quantities. You might even find big snails. This also applies to slugs. Holes in your leaves often indicate slug or snail damage. If you have rocks near your plant or a piece of wood or a decoration, look undernearth and see if you find slugs or snails. If so, get rid of the slugs/snails rather than your plant. They like dishes filled with beer and will crawl into the dish and drownd. You can also handpick but ugh... Spreading diatamaceous earth around the base of the plant will also stop snails and slugs.

No, just try to find out what ate it and treat for that. Most insects can be hand picked or squirted with a hose. Slugs can be kept away with iron pellets.

No you had a bug come thru that lunched on your plant--you can pick off some of the leaves and new ones will grow, do not pick off all of them.
