several possibility i can think of right now:
1) your file is corrupted. the solution is either you redownload the file, use VLC media player to play the corrupted file, or fix it using some patch generated from one of the ppl having a working copy. check the checksum and compare it w/ the original checksum. (md5, or crc32 checksum are quite popular)
2) no required codecs, get a codec for it. a lot of avi files are encoded using XviD, DivX, or maybe some others.. solution is download the codecs. e.g. http://www.free-codecs.com/
try download ONE of the Codec Packs. ask the file provider as well what codec he/she recommend. Note that VLC media player can play most of fileformat without the need of downloading additional codecs

If renaming fails, you may want to try using "VLC Media Player". It's a free programme and plays most file types.

rename the file to abc.avi and then try playing
