I was watching the movie "The Others" the other night. It stars Nicole Kidman as the mother of two children that at one point she keeps locked in a room. The children are a boy and a girl. I really don't understand the plot of the movie. Can anyone explain it to me?

This movie is relatively easy to explain. Nicole plays a lady named Grace who believes she has to shelter her children from direct sunlight because they have a rare disease. She instructs the three people that replace the servants who have mysteriously disappeared.
Soon the daughter whose name is Anne reveals that she can talk to the supernatural and that there are supernatural beings in the house. Grace doesn't believe her until she begins hearing strange voices in the house. She goes on a desperate search to find out what is really going on.
The ending brings about a strange twist. Grace and the children are all dead. The are "The Others". The people they hear are the people that have moved into the house.
As is revealed when her husband died in the war Grace went crazy and killed herself and the children.
Talk about a horror film that keeps you guessing. You will not be expecting the outcome of this movie. Watch it again and you may understand it more. Hope this helps.

At first, they make the movie seem as if the mother (Nicole Kidman) is sheltering the children because of some rare disease which makes their skin sensitive to sunlight. (A disease which actually exists.) The plot moves forward to portray the house as being haunted; things begin moving on their own, strange voices are heard and time seems to move very fast or very slow for no reason. As the movie progresses, you finally understand that the mother and her two children are not captives in a haunted house, but rather, they are dead and the people currently inhabiting the house are holding a seance to speak and interact with them.

Basically like everybody else said, they're ghosts. At the end of the movie, she talks about how she remembered standing over her children with a pillow and how they were so still. Then suddenly they were jumping and laughing and everything was alright. After she realizes that her children and her are ghosts, she says something along the lines of the Lord giving her a second chance.
And, for some reason she is still clinging to life. I believe that both she and her husband were ghosts when they met in the middle of the movie. He let go of life and that is why he went away, whereas she and her children are still clinging to life and that is why they are stuck in that situation.

everyone in the movie were ghosts; the elderly lady or the housekeeper was the first person to live there; mother and her two children, moved in afterwards, she killed the children then shot herself after finding out her husband died in the war. then the last family that moved in realized their house was haunted and agreed to an exorcism, this angered the mother because she didn't want to leave the house.

Nicole and her kid were dead but they didn't know it or didn't want to know it. The sounds they hear are not ghosts but the living people on the real world. Nicole and her family are "the others" they are the ghosts. Nicole's character went psycho and killed her kid and later committed suicide after the dead of her husband in the war, she feels so guilty that she refuse to admit she is dead and that she killed her kids.
