I've been to Austin once last year and stayed at the Austin Motel. It was so great, but unfortunately, there's 3 weddings there the weekend I am coming to town... Now the only affordable choices for me is the hostel over in Town Lake or the San Jose, right next to the Austin Motel. We're three girls and we don't drive, so we'll do a lot of walking around. Does anyone know what's closer walking distance? Town lake or S. Congress? Or is it pretty much the same? I walked from the Austin Motel to downtown (took about 1/2 an hour) no problem, is town lake much further away?
I'm a New yorker, and would answer any questions you have about NYC if you help.

It depends where these places are. Did you mapquest it? I can help if you send me addresses. Both would be walking distance, but ouch... leave the platforms at home!

The Congress Avenue bridge runs across Town Lake. If you're on the north side of the lake, next to the Congress Avenue Bridge, then you're very close to E. 6th Street. But I think the hostel is over by W. 5th. You may not have a good safe walking route at night between there and E. 6th. I might go with the San Jose which is way prettier than any hostel. (albeit more expensive). It's a nice well-lit walk across the Congress Avenue Bridge. And there's plenty to do on S. Congress -- I mean, the Continental Club across from the San Jose is better for music than stuff on 6th Street is. And does the 'Dillo bus run between S. Congress and the north side of the Congress Avenue bridge? If it does that's another good transportation option. You should check out the City of Austin website for the Dillo bus schedule.

Hey there. Austin sure is a great place to visit!
South Congress is a street that travels for several miles away from the river. I think the hostel is right on the river (town lake) and most things are pretty close to there. There are also bus routes very close by. So...I'd play it safe and stick to town lake...south congress might take you miles away!

Ok...let me start with this. I would say hands down Hotel San Jose. It is fun, unique, hip and very austin.

If you stay over on Town Lake and you stay near 1st or Congress and Town Lake then you are good, but you could be in big trouble if you end up a ways down.

Last..if you end up having to stay further away or are just tired of walking (all over NY) then take a cab. They will be extremely inexpensive for such a short trip

HAVE FUN and GOOD LUCK!

S. Congress is better. It's a straight shot across the bridge and up . . .although I'd recommend a cab at night.
