The human brain is separated into 3 parts: the logical, the emotional, and the primitive. These 3 don't communicate well with each other. For example, a girl has a boyfriend who treats her badly, but she can't leave him because of her feelings for him. So the logical part of her brain tries to convince the emotional part to stop feeling the way it does, but since communication between the two isn't so good, her emotional feelings don't change.
Back to the answer to your question. The intelligence and rational of these adults exists within the logical part of their brain. But when they are together, their emotional parts of their brain take over and that is why they act the way they do. Their logical and rational part of them is still there, but they are letting their emotional part of their brains do the driving for them when they are together. Thus, they are acting upon emotions instead upon rational. And believe it or not, this is completely normal!

I can't speak for women, but men tend to have all the blood removed from the brain and are incapable of rational thought... ;-)
