Well, "We Are the World" was written and performed to benefit hunger in Africa, so that kind of ties in, I guess...
As far as adoption or orphanages goes, your best bet is to look into showtunes. "It's a Hard-Knock Life" from Annie (which was sampled by P.Diddy a few years back) is like the quintessential orphanage song. Also, another song from that same musical that would work is "Maybe." Or what about Oliver! That is another musical about a plucky orphan with a lot of good songs. Good luck to you!

most songs by paul simon. he wrote an album in africa and african people sing in it. eg. diamonds on the soles of his shoes is one that i can remember. im not sure about the orphanage past though..
