if it started when you got broadband and you're running Win 2000 then there may be a link if your modem is USB
A win 2000 computer is pretty old maybe about 7 or 8 years old it was well known in those days that some motherboard didn't like USB broadband modems and would lock up when booting
try this if you're using a USB modem next time you boot when it freezes unplug the modem does it carry on with the boot
try unplugging the modem before you start up and see it it boots
if the answer to any of these questions is yes then you've got your answer it's the motherboard
You'll have to unplug the modem in future to boot then plug it back in

Taking it that you PC is clean of Viruses & spyware, I would try to start in safe mode & run scandisk on XP this is called Error checking.

I believe you have an OS problem on boot up.

broadband access expose you to the great and cruel internet. make sure you have the right protection for your computer. one possibility is that your computer got infection with some nasty worm/virus/trojan. when they go crazy and exploit your computer, your computer might hang, lose internet connectivity, respond sloww, turn off in sudden, 100% CPU usage, data loss, overheated, etc..

beware!
