This is a tough one to answer - partly becuase there is no real agreement as to what is and isn't a "cobra", and partly because population figures are inaccurate or non-existent.

The cobra is part of the Elapidae family, which includes coral snakes, mambas, and various cobras. The family itself is probably more populous in Asia and Australasia than in Africa.

The traditional cobras, like the King Cobra have been in drastic decline in Asia and are now certainly an endangered species in India. The Egyptian Cobra and Saharan Cobra, although also reduced in numbers, does appear to be numerous than the King.

So I would say that Africa has more cobras, while Asia has more venomous snakes in the family Elapidae.

The Cobra is the sign of Royalty in ancient Egypt. The Pharaoh wears the Royal Cobra at the front of his crown.

The Cobra is also associated very much with India.

The Cobra must be treated with the utmost respect. There is a species of Cobra known as the spitting Cobra. It does not have to bite you to do you harm. It spits venom into a person's eyes and they die.
