Basically, England was initially a Catholic country and Henry VIII wanted a divorce with his wife Catherine of Aragon. The Catholic church does not permit divorce so he got excommunicated (basically to cut ties with) from the Church. He then formed his own Church of England where he was able to get a divorce.

During his proceedings of trying to get a divorce form his first wife Catherine of Aragon. I believe the yr would be 1528. Whenhe was told no to a divorce or annulment he appointed himself head of the Church of England which is now known as the Anglican Church.
