Both are good cars.

LOOKS:
Exterior:
The Prius makes a statement--people will know that you're driving a hybrid because of the Prius' unique look, whereas the Civic Hybrid looks like the other Civic models.

The Civic was Motor Trend's Car of the Year in 2006 (award given for newly designed car; the Prius has not been redesigned in a while.). I really like the way the new Civic looks; however, some people don't like the back and the front lights. The Prius is something that I've gotten used to.

Interior:
The Civic Hybrid has only a few minor differences on the inside from the rest of the Civic line . One such difference is a gauge that allows you to track your mpg as you're driving. That can be distracting, I suppose; but you can also turn that feature off, if you'd like.

The interior of the Prius is really different. The futuristic spaceship-like consoles can either be confusing, difficult and distracting, or it can be really appealing and cool. This is a personal preference and you should definitely take a look at both cars' interiors before purchasing.

MILEAGE:
The Prius gets slightly better gas mileage overall, if you look at EPA mpg estimates (Honda gets 49/51; Toyota claims 51/60). However, in reality both get around 45-50 mpg if you drive normally.

TECHNOLOGY:
The Prius Synergy Drive engine works in a slightly different manner from the Honda's "IMA" engine.

The Honda's gas engine is coupled with an electric motor; therefore, the electric part of Honda's hybrid technology is always on.

With the Prius, there are times when you drive slowly (under 20mph, I believe) where the electric motor is running exclusively. Then, as you speed up, the gas kicks in, and then you are using the gas primarily (or exclusively).

For this reason, if you drive primarily city driving, I would expect that you would get better gas mileage out of the Prius. However, if you do a lot of highway driving, the Civic could potentially outperform the Prius mpg-wise, although the difference is really not that large.

PERFORMANCE:
Toyotas typically are known to be more drifty. Not particularly responsive and sporty. But, if you like how Toyotas drive, the Prius is no different. The same goes with the Civic Hybrid. It handles nicely, is quite responsive. I personally would give the nod here to the Civic; but, again, this is something that you'd have to test out yourself.

Hope that helps!

No I wouldn't buy american. For one reason and that's quality. I would go with the prius because it has been out longer and there are probably fewer problems with it. The Honda Civic hybrid is new and the company hasn't had as much time to get all the kinks out. That's not to say it's a bad car, but I would go with the prius.

It relies upon on what you like, the two autos have followers. i bought the Prius because of the fact: The Prius is lots greater relaxing topersistent, has extra area for shipment and passengers (it particularly is a mid-sized vehicle), has greater protection useful factors (including vehicle stability administration), gets greater effectual mpg, and has a hybrid device that replaced into designed to be a hybrid from the floor up fairly than in basic terms bolting on a motor to replace the flywheel and keeping all the extreme maintenance areas of an old shaped vehicle. The Prius additionally has an rather extreme proprietor delight score and occasional maintenance standards. The Honda is smaller and decrease priced. I advise renting the two for a week and see which you like greater effectual or a minimum of bypass on a trypersistent it rather is greater effective than in basic terms as quickly as around the block. i've got confidence that the two Honda and Toyota sellers have condominium centers.

I think the Prius gets better fuel milage but the Civic is a little bit bigger and looks just like the regular civic.

The Honda Insight is the best in terms of fuel milage though. Most people think that it is a little bit odd looking though.
