This is a spoiler question. If you haven't seen the movie, stop reading.

In the movie it is explained by Captain Barbossa that the reason he and his crew turn into skeletons when the moonlight hits them is because ten years before they took the cursed Aztec gold of Cortez. He states that they did not notice or pay attention to the changes they experienced at first (not being able to taste food or "feel the spray of the sea"). After ten years, they've had time to decompose. Why then, does Jack Sparrow turn into a skeleton five minutes after he takes a piece of the gold when he hasn't had enough time to decompose as the others in the crew have?

Captain Barbossa doesn't say word-for-word "we didn't notice" (I don't know the exact wording), but in one way or another he tells Elizabeth Swann that after a while the curse began to take effect and slowly turned them into the cursed undead. They EVENTUALLY turned into skeletons under the moonlight, not IMMEDIATELY.

well I think the almost- exact wording Barbossa used, when explaining what happened to the pirates after they took the gold, is "we spent them and traded them - frittered them away on drink and food and pleasurable company. but the more we gave them away, the more we came to realize that drink did not satisfy, food turned to ash in our mouths, and all the pleasurable company in the world could not slake our lust. We are cursed men, Miss Turner."
(I am officially obsessed, I have the dialog from the entire film pretty much memorized ;O)
so he never actually said how long it took them to turn into living-dead pirates, but you do have an interesting point.
I never would have thought of that
"clearly you've never been to singapore"
It's probably just a mistake by the writers, that happens sometimes..... it's still an awesome movie though!

Because the curse turns anyone who who had a part in taking the gold (Sparrow stole it from the other pirates) into skeletons under the moonlight. The other Pirates also did the same under the moonlight.

It's probably because he's been doing "accursed" things his whole life...he is a pirate, he comendeered a couple of ships throughout the movie...i guess as punishment the curse worked "faster?"

Plus it said...they didn't notice...so therefore they were probably slowly rotting away

Those are the only things i can think up...

Good job on that! i love pirates obsessively but i have found a worthy opponent...i never noticed...touche!

That is a good question. I had never really thought about it. But I guess the simplest excuse would be, "it's a movie, and they can do whatever they want." That would probably be the movie-makers' excuse, to explain it away. I'll have to watch it again and have another look-see.

I dont recall him saying that they didnt notice. I know he said that for ten years they have been cursed and have had to live with it and have been looking for every peice of the gold to return it.

But I dont think he said that it took them that long to know that they were dead.
