The drive has to be able to write to CD or DVD disc, not only read from one.

If the CD or DVD drive is ROM it will not write to anything, but only be read from. It has to have the R or R/RW feature.
R in this case is Recordable. RW is recordable/writable.

Backing up DVDs means making copies of original DVDs onto blank discs, right? So yes, you need a DVD recorder to be able to write data to blank discs.

You need the correct hardware to run the software.
The CD ROM has to be a DVD burner.
