My husband and I own a very small condo (650 sq feet) so we chose to get a Pack-n-Play for our baby to use instead of a crib. We will use this until she reaches the weight limits.
For your niece: Pack-n-plays take up less space than a standard crib (and are cheaper usually). However, they do have mini cribs (portable cribs) which may be comparable in size to the pack-n-play....what I love about the pack-n-play though is that you can buy the kind that it's a crib, bassinet, and changing table all in one....talk about saving space!! Not to mention it can be folded up. If your niece is coming over occasionally I think I would go with the Pack-n-play option.

Depends on both - Portable crib or standard crib? In my particular case, the crib I have, which is not a portable style, is much more bulky, and much less portable. Kind of a pain to get out of the baby's room. The pack and play is much smaller, but then it does not have the mattress that is in the crib. It also packs up in a bag with handles. If taking a car trip or airplane trip, this device is perfect.
Going on trips, I take the pack and play, not the crib. If the baby is staying at grandma's for an extended period of time (ie more than 1 night) i take the time to pack the crib, as the baby sleeps better in it and Grandma only lives 20 minutes away, so the extra trip to drive there is well worth it.
Grandma also has a pack and play, for naps during days we spend there, and the baby sleeps fine.
In all honesty, the only better device purchased than the pack and play was a swing (the fischer price one that you can change the swing direction/orientation - side to side or front to back orientation.
In terms of pack and play's we never used the mobile that came with it, or the changing table. The only thing we ever used, was the pack and play itself, the thing to make it sit higher, and the noise maker/song player/ white noise machine. The other attachments in my experience were superflous, and not used. They now take up a drawer in my dresser.

a Pack N Play takes up less room, but you could always invest in a mini crib (also known as a portable crib). My fiance and I live in a very small apartment and are buying one. We checked their sturdiness at the stores (they can hold up to 50 lbs) and compared it to the Pack N Play. IMO, the Pack N Play's playpen area didn't seem comfortable, and the bassinet part can only be used until they're about 20 lbs. A crib would be a better investment, but a mini crib is all we can get right now. (They're about $100.) You can also use the mini crib in a co sleeping fashion by dropping the side and placing it up next to the bed. Walmart and Target have cute mini cribs. Good luck!

I'd say the pack n play takes up slightly less room, plus they're portable...but I didn't like those because they can only sleep in the top for 6 months max...and then they sleep too close to the ground in my opinion (the ground is much colder).
Cribs are better in that case, in my opinion.

i used a pack in play for the 1 st yr. of both my childrens life. I loved it.. I fit in the corner or their room, and when they are newborns, come come with a higher bed like a bassinet that is easily removable later and u can use the bottom mattress. I loved it but once 1 trade in for a toddler bed because when the child's weight is pressed onto the thin mattress it can hurt.. good luck!!!

My son is in basic terms about 5 months old and continues to be using the bassinet area of the p.c.. n play. We to are downsizing our domicile and could be taking away the crib because of the fact it wont greater healthy and could be using the p.c.. n play as his mattress.
