Today, coming to school I tried to turn on my 1990 Lincoln Towncar. And all it did was make a very loud screeching sound and then smoke started coming out of the engine.

Does anyone know what cause this????!!

BTW This car leaks a lot of oil, one of the timing belts was kind of loose. I HOPE ITS NOT WHAT IM THINKING (LACK OF OIL CAUSING THE ENGINGE TO WELD ITSELF)

How much would it cost to fix this?

Also I forgot to mention that when you have the AC on and you come to a stop sometimes the car will stall.

Without looking at it myself, I'm going out on a limb and guessing a pulley bearing froze up, water pump bearing, or A/C pulley bearing.

I doubt it's major.
Could be kind of pricy depending on what froze up though. Like water pump.

The screech could be your fan belt, covered with oil, trying to get traction on the pulley. The smoke would come from the same source, because it would be the oil that's on the fan belt (or serpentine belt or power steering belt) burning off from the friction.

Check the belts and look at the rest of the engine. If nothing else seems wrong and the car will start, that's probably it.

The bearings on the clutch of your air conditioner are out. The pulley is froze up and won't move.

if it was the water pump then you could blow the head gasket which pretty much destroyed your head...that lack of oil could of destroyed the bottom end new engine may be needed...just throwing out opinion
