We had an HVAC tech measure the amount of freon in our heat pump today. When he attached the meter hoses he let the freon bleed off for about 3-5 seconds. When I asked him how much freon I just lost he said it was 'negligible'. Is he being truthful or did he botch the job? The heat pump we have holds 10lbs of freon. He measured around 2 pounds and said we have a leak. Is this B.S.?

He is measuring liquid freon. He had to bleed off enough to fill his hose with liquid. Air can be compressed and show a false reading. Liquid can't. He was doing it properly and you really didn't lose that much freon.

If it bled off on the low pressure side then it is negligible. It was more pressure vapor than actual freon. If you want to hear BS ask him how much the copper lines are that connect the air handler to your outside unit... you'll get a good laugh out of that one!

You must have suspected something was wrong and that's why he was there in the first place. Freon isn't used any more because it depletes the ozone layer but while he's connected he can see if you are losing gas because the meter is dropping, you have to learn to trust some people, they're not going to risk their license just for a couple of bucks.

He did it correct. Chuck P mentioned that Freon is not used anymore and that is incorrect. It is still being used and will fdor manymore years. The other refrigerant is R-22. Both are available today.

He vented his manifold gages a bit long for me! 1-2 seconds of purging the hoses/manifold should be enough to get an accurate measurement. How did he measure 2 pounds? Sounds a bit fishy to me. Get another opinion! ;-)=
