A crossover cable will work - But no one seemed to fully answer your question - IF you get a crossover cable is just like your current ethernet cable except that the wires are "crossed" on the inside so you can use it to hook two computers together.
Whether you have a cross over cable or a router use the below steps.
First you need to share a folder on the machine you want to put files on - Right click on a folder go the sharing tab and share the folder - You may already know how to do this?
Then on the machine that you want to put the files on - Click start run type in cmd and hit enter. type in ipconfig - If your using a crossover cable you will get something like 169.254.130.1 - Note that if you use a crossover cable it may take a minute or two for your machine to get one of those ip's.
Once you get the ip - go to the other machine click start run and type in \\the ip address - example \\169.254.130.1 - Click OK - Your shared folder should come up
Good luck!

Make or buy an ethernet 'crossover' cable. With that, WinXP would be able to setup a simple file sharing network for you.

Hi,
You can use the cross over cable if i am right.
Connector 1
Pinout Connector 2
Pinout
1 3
2 6
3 1
4 OPEN
5 OPEN
6 2
7 OPEN
8 OPEN
So pin 1 -> pin 3, pin 2 -> pin 6, pin 3 -> pin 1, and pin 6 -> pin 2. All of the other pins are left open.

also if you have internet hooked up to your main system you will need two network cards in that system, one for your cable/dsl to plug into and one to plug crossover cable into to go to other computer. Now if you would like to share internet on to backup machine just right click on connection on main computer that is for network card that is hooked to cable/dsl and bridge the two network cards together, once this is done you just setup network connection sharing(ICS) and you can use help files to show you how to set that up.

get a cross-over cable, hook the two PC's together and assign IP's to both PCs under the network control panel.
