do you think you'd benefit from quad-core and is it worth it?

Actually here's a benchmark using the quad cpu and the 8800 series. The cpu's speed does help it perform.

But that's only using the 8800 series. If you have a weaker video card, it's really not going to make a difference. Most games do need the video card to be the fastest. The cpu just has to be fast enough to keep up with it.

I'm sure it would be quite powerful. I'm not a hardcore gamer but I do demand a lot from my PC for 3D modeling & animation & rendering and I get by just fine without quad cores. The workstations at my school don't have quad core either but they get by just fine.

I'd suggest spending that extra money on RAM or a great video card.

See quad core - Core 2 QX6700 on the following. It doesn’t make much difference on that game and dual core only shows limited gain - but for a few more FPS it might be worth it.

quad core right now would be a waste of upgrade money.
core 2 duo matches its gaming performance and there are less that 5 games that take advantage of more than 2 cores.
core 2 duo is also much cheaper. if you want to spend wisely and get more bang for your buck...a 200+ dollar core 2 duo will get the job extremely well done
