I am going to purchase a playstation 2 soon, and I was wondering how long I can keep a game disk running (because I am not going to buy a memory card yet) without shutting it off. I dont know if it will damage anything.

PS2s do not overheat or catch fire, that is ridiculous. Spend a few bucks on a memory card.

I have a PS2 and I keep it running all the time for a long time because I leave to go somewhere or something else and it still works as good as when i bought it 3 yrs ago. Anyway, you should buy a memory card, they arent that expensive and I only have 2 that I bought together for like 30 dollars and I use only those 2 for all my games.

You can keep it running as long as you have electricity (be afraid of blackout, be very afraid), the PS2 doesn't break, someone doesn't hit the power button.
Why not get a memory card? They're pretty cheap. A Sony memory card is about 40/45 bucks for the red and blue combo package, and about 25 bucks for the black one. Third party memory cards are even cheaper and holds a lot more.

The new slim PS2s do not have fan builts inside. So leaving the unit on for long periods of time could over heat it. Luckily enough they have a system feature that shuts them off before they damage the unit. You may want to goto your local gamestop and buy a used memory card for 17.99. Also trade in your old stuff if you dont have money to spend for it.

For the 19.00 wouldn't it be easier to buy the card then risk wearing out the machine? But I suppose it is just a disk player, CD player whir for hours on end without wearing out.

The longest I have ever kept a disc running is two days and nothing happened I advise not to go over that or your disc might get damaged or the ps2 could overheat and catch fire.

I recomend you buy the memory card becasue your going to need it. I also will tell you something else, DO NOT use the WILDCATS brand in your playstation becasue it will freeze it up and it's never right after that!!!!!!!!!!!!!
