Newer computers has a Wake on Lan (WoL, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake-on-LAN ) capability on its motherboard. The configuration can be set through computer's BIOS (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS ). using this WoL, your computer can be turned on through network (kind like controlled remotely). it might also be possible that your computer is set to turn on when there's network activity or any other triggering hardware events.. check your hardware settings through device manager/control panel

You may want to check your Event Viewer to obtain more information. To check this, right click on My Computer and left click on Manage. Inside of Computer management, click on the plus (+) next to System Tools then plus next to Event Viewer and finally the plus next to System. Inside of System, you will who and what started up your computer.

check the bios settings. Maybe there is a "wake up on hour..." or a "wake up when modem rings" option activated..

sounds like some malware, when it happens, look in task manager to see whats running. trojans can do this, but it might be one of your programs with options to stop it.
