Windows 98 discovered that station C: (Harddisc) does not contain a legal FAT or FAT32 partition. How can I solve the problem without loosing my data on the harddisc. If I boot my computer with a startup disc, it still would not solve the problem. I have tried to run a program called Testdriv from Seatools without luck. Can anyone help.

It's almost certain that your Hard Drive has died and as a previous answer states you need professional help if the data is really important. It is very expesive but if you have to get your data back go to www.disklabs.co.uk . I know it's too late now but in future back up all important files. You can buy a USB hard Drive 250 gig for under £60 nowadays, this will hold all your music photos and other important documents with ease.As you have sadly found Hard Drives can fail with no warning you should really back up everything weekly.

if the FAT (file allocation table is banjaxed then the drive is almost certainly toast.

you could try removing the disk and putting it as a slave disk but I doubt that will do any good.

if the data on it is important (read valuable) then you may be able to get some of the data recovered using a professional service.. but it'll be costly

there are several possibility's

1 your hard drive is failing and need replacing

2 the partition table is corrupt if this is the case you'll need to fdisk it and reformat then you;ll lose all your data

your only hope is to boot off the floppy and run scandisk if that doesn't fix it try fdisk and format and reinstall windows
if that doesn't work throw the hard drive away and replace it

Check in your BIOS to see if it's recognizing your C: drive.

It could be omething as simple as a dead BIOS battery
