there should be a shift key... that is, a key that shows an arrow pointing up.

This depends on the phone - your cell phone provider may have an interactive tutorial at thier website -

but for most phones you hold down the * key or the # key while entering text to change from lower to capital -

This should also be in your user guide. (no offense) but it is ually one of the key points they make in thier book - there should be a whole section on it in the guides.

But for most phones - PRESS and let go of either # or */ or hold the buttons in. you should see lower case letters on your screen move to upper case to verify that it changed.

Uaually it is with the * button on the bottom left, keep ticking it until you get the letters you want.
