It is hard for shy, sensitive people to believe, but a high percentage of the population is shy, as they are!
Here are some suggestions that may help:
At parties and other events, ask to help the hostess by passing out appetizers, drinks, or taking people's coats.
When talking with another person one-to-one, ask that person questions about his job, favorite tv shows or movies, or what kind of music she likes, and so on. The more you do this, the easier it gets.
You may feel inferior to louder, more outgoing people. Remind yourself that shy people are NOT inferior. They often have better, stronger, more long lasting friendships than do the extroverted.
I don't believe it's healthy to try to be something you are not, to try to change your essential nature. It's better to celebrate the person you are, a quiet, sensitive person with a lot to offer the world in terms of perception, sensitivity, and depth of feeling.

Getting yourself not to run away from a group of people is the first step. You don't have to answer every question or comment about everything; just listen and get comfortable enough to say something you feel quite sure about every now and then.Greet the said group when you see them- show that you're friendly and you'll get used to them eventually. But you must remember that everyone is a little nervous about meeting new people and they'll welcome friendliness.

Think of something that you feel you can't do, something that really scares you and do it, prove a point to yourself and you won't look back. This worked for me.
