When I bought my house, the previous owner left about 30 cans of paint there, most are at least 1/2 full. I have a feeling that it is going to be expensive to get rid of it. Does anyone have an idea for getting rid of the cans in a cheaper (though legal) way?

And while we're at it, I have about 30 cans of spraypaint and a 50 gallon barrel of oil that were left too.

Most disposal sites have an area you can drop off those things for a fee. They set them up that way so people don't dispose of them in the sewers.

When I was painting, we would open the cans, and let all the paint dry completely. If it's latex (water based) paint, this should happen in a day or less.

Check with your local landfill to see if they will accept the dried paint. If so, they will probably charge you for the weight of the paint, or possibly just by the amounts of loads of trash you have. They can tell you this on the phone too.

Check with a local paint store for a good way to get rid of oil-based paint. There may be local regulations dictating the disposal of this.

Oil may be disposed at some recycle/transfer stations if your town has one. Mine takes oil, batteries and tires ($5.00 each). As far as paints go some towns and cities have a hazardous waste pickup day. If the paint is oil based you may have a problem versus latex. Most dumps will take it if the paint has dried and hardened however 1/2 cans full of paint won't dry for a very long time.
Call your local landfill and see if they have a place for them or your local public works to check for a haz-mat disposal day they may have scheduled.

We had a bunch of old paint also. I waited for the heat of summer, took the lids off and left them outside until they were comepletely rock solid. It took a while for them to dry out completely, but then they are safe to throw away. As for the spray paint, I would just spray the contents into a paper bag until they are empty, then dispose of them. We take all of our oil to the dump where they have a special oil recycle tank. It is free to dump your oil there. Thanks for NOT dumping your toxic waste out and taking the time to figure out the right way.
